    Credible Messengers are individuals whom have faced similar challenges to our youth and/or families and have overcome it and now are inspired to work and lend guidance to those that are in a similar need as they once were. The work of the Credible Messengers provides a message of resiliency, credibility and voice that can directly connect to each youth’s inner thoughts and experiences.

     

    The Credible Messenger Mentor Program (CMM) is a group-based mentoring program that helps young adults transform the attitudes and behaviors that led to their involvement with the criminal justice system by developing positive and appropriate relationships and supporting them in making safe decisions once back in the community.  The CMM team is made up of full time and part-time Credible Messenger mentors, a Case Planner and a Program Coordinator.  Youth will come together twice weekly as a cohort of up to 12 youth, ages 12-18, with the CMM team supporting them. The mentors will utilize Interactive Journaling and Motivational Interviewing to support the youth to examine their feelings, evaluate their own behaviors and develop strategies for change. In addition to the Interactive Journaling Curriculum during group sessions, Mentors will facilitate groups that are targeted to meet the needs of where the group and individuals are at and to ensure we are targeting services at risks identified in the YLS. Specifically, Mentors will be trained to facilitate the evidence-based curriculums of, ART (Aggression Replacement Training), Seven Challenges (substance use) and ARISE (independent living). Group will also be used for group builders, educational activities, anger reduction strategies, trips, recreational outings, group-based community service activities, and family events to name a few.

     

    Youth will also meet with CMMs on an ad hoc basis throughout the week for one-on-one mentoring as well as for support with various activities such as going to get a driver’s license or preparing for a job interview. This pilot NSP Aftercare program is designed to prevent recidivism by strengthening youth attachment to education and community as well as strengthening family functioning and fostering positive peer relationships.

    Responsibilities

    Essential Functions: The per diem mentor will participate in two therapeutic groups per week in the Brooklyn (4PM-8PM), and support the CMM team in preparing for dinner, group, clean-up and processing the group/individual progress.  They will be available during these hours to provide one-on-one mentoring to the youth, as needed.  They will participate in as many group team-building and family engagement activities as possible, such as recreational outings, community-service activities, etc.  The mentors will be included on a rotating on-call list to provide 24 hours/7days a week support for youth.

     

    Work Environment:  The Brooklyn NSP Aftercare program will be based out of Bensonhurst NSP in Brooklyn, and CMM groups will be facilitated at the Rising Ground Family Resource Center in Brooklyn.  On occasion, the per diem mentors will be required to travel, to navigate NYC roads/public transportation system and complete home and school visits, and visits to other service providers’ offices (i.e. ACS, Probation, resource center, pro-social activity, etc.) should the team determine it were necessary to support a youth in their treatment planning.

     

    Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: This is a per diem position involving between 4-10 hours per week. Typically, the per diem mentors will participate in groups on Monday and Friday from 4 PM to 8 PM.  Additional hours will fluctuate to meet the needs of the team and clients.  As a team, we are available to clients 24/7/365 and can respond to crises that may emerge.  The Per diem mentors might be called upon to respond to a crisis/need of a youth and need to be flexible/available to meet the needs of the group members.

     

    Travel: The CMM team provides services to youth and families who reside in New York City.  Typically, the per diem mentors will be positioned in the group site, and if field work, home visits or school visits need to be conducted, the mentors will provide their own transportation and work-related travel expenses will be reimbursed. 

    Qualifications

    Required Education and Experience: A High School/equivalent diploma and NYS driver’s license is required.  The mentors must have experience with group facilitation and experience working with adolescents.

     

    Preferred Education and Experience: History of criminal justice involvement and familiarity with the Bronx is preferred.  Spanish-speaking preferred.

     

    Additional Eligibility Qualifications

    • Participate in all Juvenile Justice and Credible Mentor-related training.
    • Participate in individual and group supervision as well as treatment team meetings to review youth’s progress/challenges and service plan goals.
    • Collaborate and communicate with the CMM team members regarding case planning services and safety/risk concerns.
    • Work in partnership with court officials, schools and other community-based organizations to ensure the safety of the youth and to follow through with their participation in court-mandated services. Advocate for youth in court as needed.
    • Model reliable, supportive and positive relationships to help youth navigate challenges and achieve their goals. Build and maintain supportive relationships with the youth that focus on improving problem solving and decision-making skills.
    • Model professionalism and respectful behavior in both the community and in group.
